Alchemy sees every plant as a complete being made of three principles: Sulfur, Mercury, and Salt.

• Sulfur is the plant’s soul — its volatile oils, aroma, and unique character. It represents essence, identity, and the spark of life within the plant.

• Mercury is the spirit — the subtle, flowing force carried in alcohol-soluble compounds. It connects, moves, and communicates the plant’s vitality.

• Salt is the body — the minerals and structure that hold everything in place. It is grounding, stability, and endurance.

In nature, these aspects are already united. In alchemy, they are carefully separated, purified, and then recombined. Through this refinement, the plant doesn’t lose anything; it becomes more complete, more potent, more available for us to work with.
